Free and easy day. Woke up at 8am. Clear emails and updated the front page. Had my breakfast in the room (muffin, 99p). Checked out and was ready for my day of sight seeing at 10am.
Took the tube from Marble Arch to Bond Street and switch to the Jubilee Line to get to Westminster. Got out of the station near the Cabinet War Rooms. Walk across Westminster Bridge to see Big Ben and Westminster Hall. All right … not exactly impressed.
Big Ben & Westminster Hall
Walked along Thames River. A long queue has formed for the London Eye. Actually thought it was quite an eye sore. Now I can kinda imagine how ugly it’s going to be when the Singapore one is ready.
London Eye along Thames
On the way, went to the Clive Prison Museum, Tate Modern, Southwark Cathedral, Borough Market before reaching the City Hall and finally Tower Bridge. (“London Bridge is falling down … falling down” … got it all wrong … it’s Tower Bridge!) Went up the bridge for the exhibition about the history and the engine room. Not bad, was quite fun (except being alone makes taking pictures really difficult.).
After the bridge, went across Thames and walked generic valtrex uk past the Tower of London. Din want to visit it as my leg was aching big time by then.
So I was done with the area by 3pm. Was planning to take the tube to end my day at Harrods. But since I was going to switch train at Green Park, decided to get out and take a look at the Buckingham Palace as well. Green Park was really nice. Quite a lot of people were just lazing around on the grass, reading books and enjoying the sun. The walk to Buckingham took about 10 minutes. Sad to say, not worth it at all. Nothing at Buckingham, except for the high fences. And not forgetting being spotted by fellow Singaporeans. No idea why they were so excited to see another Singaporean, I wasn’t.
So I was done with Buckingham in less than 30 mins. Walked back to the Tube station and went down to Knightsbridge. This was supposed to be the highlight of the day. (I planned it that way). But damn should I be disappointed? Food Hall, Egyptian Hall, Luxury Restroom, halls after halls selling everything and anything …. Overrated! I am happier at Mustafa anytime.
Shopping @ Oxford Street
Was done with work about 5. Decided to do some good shopping at Oxford Street. Since I was a the east end of Oxford, at Shaftesbury, Charing Cross, decided to do a long walk and end off at the west end, where my hotel is.
Amazingly, 45 minutes later, I was done. There is nothing that I could afford! Everything is so expensive when you multiply it by 3. Cheapest pair of Clarks online pharmacy for valtrex shoes cost £39.99 That’s like SGD$120, and it wasn’t even nice. ?
By then, I was starving. Looked around, nothing but sandwiches. *Arggghhhh* I want something hot and soupy!!! Decent steak at Angus is going to cost £29. Sorry, I only have SGD$70 meal budget a day. In the end, I ended up buying KFC (at least there is meat) and went back to the hotel to eat. Sad day.
13 hours of flying later, had to wait another hour before I could get onto land. First the gate was occupied, a good 30 minutes delay. Next, the new air bridge failed, had to wait for the ground crew to send in the mobile stairs. So by the time I got out, it was already 4pm London time. Good one hour behind schedule.
Taking the Heathrow Express was rather effortless. 15 minutes I was already in city centre. 5 minutes taxi ride got me to Cumberland, Marble Arch.
The hotel lobby is impressive. Large, modern and stylish. While the room is rather small, it’s nice, clean and very well equipped. 29’ Philips LCD TV!!!
Cumberland Hotel @ Marble Arch
The hotel is at the west end of Oxford Street, right beside the Marble Arch metro station. Took a walk down Oxford street, within 10 minutes, I found all the places I need to go … Marks generic valtrex pill identifier & Spence, Selfridges, Zara … but all closed. It was already 6.30pm. I think I covered about 2km on foot. Not exactly very exciting since most of the shops were closed.
Had a really hard time finding food. Since I was not willing to compromise with KFC and MacDonald’s, had to abandon the main street and explore the side lanes. Eventually found a decent mid size restaurant. Had my first original UK fish & chips!!! Can’t say it’s delicious, but definitely comfort food. Major jet lag, was already falling asleep while trying to finish the fish.
